Camionetas (2014) is a single-channel video that follows metal and mattress collectors around Southern California. Made over a period of 10 years, the video was shot on a variety of cellphones while Ontiveros was going to and from work. Camionetas is a simultaneous portrait of both what is in front of and what is behind the camera. On-frame, one sees an underground economy where objects, discarded in the United States, are collected by individuals who either refurbish the items to sell in the United States, transport the items to the Mexico and Central America, or exchange the items for their sheer material value in weight as metal. Off-frame, we see a portrait of Ontiveros himself, both his interest in these economies and his own morning and evening commute where the soundscape of the radio offers a glimpse into his interiority.
